November 17, 2004—On the popular technology blog engadget there were a number of choice responses to last week's story about the student RFID-tagging initiative in Spring, Texas. On posted argued that the technology offers very little protection against kidnappers since "[kidnappers] will just throw the card out the window." Another noted that it is inaccurate to think of the system as a sort of GPS, since the passive RFID tags in the kids' cards are not locating devices: "it's not like the police are going to be able to utilize the technology in a search should one of the little tykes go missing."
