RFID Journal LIVE! Put RFID to Work

RFID Journal

Aerospace RFID Summit

The Aerospace RFID Summit will provide a unique opportunity to understand the fundamentals of RFID technology in relation to the aerospace sector. Participants will take away key learnings in the following subject areas: technology basics (including overviews of physics, hardware and software), business and use cases of RFID for aerospace and defense, and important standards and regulations that are key to effective deployments.

Additionally, participants will learn about aviation-specific applications of RFID and successful in-service evaluations that have been conducted. The workshop will conclude with an understanding of the recently published FAA Advisory Circular, and the AS5678 performance testing standard. This workshop will be taught by industry-recognized technical subject-matter experts. No prerequisites or prior experience are necessary in order to attend.

RFID Basics
New to RFID? Here's your opportunity to gain a basic introduction to the fundamentals of the technology. The differences between the various classes of tags will be explained, including active and passive systems, and the need for additional IT systems to build upon RFID in real-world applications will be highlighted. The session will also include a brief overview of the EPCglobal network, the future of ISO standards, ETSI reader regulations and the latest standardization efforts worldwide. Finally, the relationship between different standards in the area of RFID and EPC technologies, including the latest EPC Gen 2 standard, will be presented.

11:30 AM

Welcome and Introduction
This session will provide an introduction to the speakers and their organizations, as well as their relevance to RFID in the aerospace sector.

Speaker:
Jim DelRossi, Founder and Managing Director, ADR Advisors, Inc.

11:50 AM

The Value of RFID to the Aerospace Industry
What do aerospace companies need in an RFID tag? This session will examine memory requirements—96-bit to 64 kilobytes—including the types of packaging tags must have, the standards that should be adhered to and the need for interoperability. The speaker will also discuss why the industry needs UHF tags, as well as the challenges of geographic mobility.

12:25 PM

Applicable Standards Organizations
This session will provide an overview of three major standards organizations working toward standards for the aerospace industry: the Air Transport Association (ATA), the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) and EPCglobal. Learn about the role each plays, and how these organizations will affect the adoption of RFID in the aerospace sector.

12:45 PM

Business and Use Cases for RFID
What is the real value of using RFID in the aerospace sector? What are the major applications in commercial aviation? This session will define business and use cases for the technology in a variety of applications that have shown real benefits today.

Speaker:
Jim DelRossi, Founder and Managing Director, ADR Advisors, Inc.

Navigating an RFID Implementation Project
A recent aviation-related project will be explored to provide useful information regarding pitfalls to avoid, lessons learned and tips for a successful implementation. The presenter will describe a systematic method for effectively managing an RFID project, including establishing a business and use case. Also considered will be the physics of RFID, specific business processes and the importance of coordinating hardware, software and individuals.

Speaker:
Jim DelRossi, Founder and Managing Director, ADR Advisors, Inc.

2:25 PM

Test Lab Overview
AS5678 is a requirements specification created by SAE International for the production and testing of passive-only RFID tags for the aerospace industry. This specification is related to the Air Transportation Association's SPEC2000 specification. This session will provide an overview of AS5678 testing requirements.

Speaker:
Chris Meier, RFID Technical Coordinator, Sun Microsystems

2:40 PM

AS5678 Testing Walkthrough
AS5678 applications are dependant on the usage of tags and tagged parts. This session will illustrate how to determine AS5678 testing needs, as well as strategies for combining AS5678 with other product testing.

Speakers:
Jim DelRossi, Founder and Managing Director, ADR Advisors, Inc.
Chris Meier, RFID Technical Coordinator, Sun Microsystems
