Pre-conference Seminar

RFID IN COMMERCIAL AVIATION
Presented in cooperation with The Boeing Company and Airbus

12:45 pm
Welcome and Introduction
Speakers: Jens Heitmann, Senior Manager, System/Equipment Standardization Process and Methods, Airbus
Kenneth Porad, Program Manager, Automated Identification Program, Boeing Commercial Airplanes Group

12:45 pm

Understanding Commercial Aviation Industry Specifications: SPEC 2000
The Air Transport Association's (ATA) SPEC 2000 has been the globally adopted specification on which the commercial aviation industry has based its business operations for the past 20 years. This session will provide an overview of the SPEC 2000 data format for parts traceability with a focus on the original intent of the spec development, the technical aspects - including RFID, and some real-world business operations and supply chain applications in the commercial aviation sector.
Panelists: Ken Jones, Director, Electronic Data Standards, SPEC 2000, Air Transport Association
W. David Meyer, LCD Manufacturing Program Manager, Rockwell Collins
Facilitator: Jon Andresen, President, Technology Solutions

2:00 pm

Explaining Boeing and Airbus RFID Supplier Requirements
Airbus and Boeing have agreed to collaborate on developing common part marking and automated data collection requirements in order to provide advancing part marking and to standardize automated data collection. This cooperative initiative began with bar code technology and is now migrating to include RFID. Both Airbus and Boeing have agreed to require SPEC 2000 guidelines as standard commercial practice. Hear their common plans and understand the reasons and benefits behind these efforts.
Speakers: Jens Heitmann, Senior Manager, System/Equipment Standardization Process and Methods, Airbus
Kenneth Porad, Program Manager, Automated Identification Program, Boeing Commercial Airplanes Group

FAA Certification and RFID Use on Commercial Airplanes

To ensure air safety, nothing happens on a commercial airplane without certification from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). That applies to the use of RFID on parts. Hear first-hand from the FAA on the process and existing research to measure the impact of electromagnetic effects on board in-flight aircraft. The FAA also will share the release of its FAA Policy Memo certifying the safe use of passive 13.56 MHz RFID technology on airplanes and the benefits they see connecting RFID air safety for the flying public.
Speaker: John Dimtroff, Electrical Engineer (Electromagnetic Effects), Avionic Systems Branch, Aircraft Engineering Division, Federal Aviation Administration

3:30 pm

Pilot Program Progress and Findings
Once the move to RFID technology was announced by Airbus and The Boeing Company, the aviation industry moved quickly to implement a number of critical pilot programs, including engine parts marking, in-service evaluations, unapproved parts, tire marking and others. The pilot implementers will share the first hand details including details on pilot programs, findings, lessons learned, benefits and future plans.
Panelists:
James (Butch) G.Ford, Ph.D., Manager, AOD Engineering Support, Federal Express (988K)
Judy Harrison, Analyst, Engine Maintenance, Regulatory Compliance, Delta Air Lines (3,318K)
Patrick F. King, Ph.D., Global Electronics Strategies, MARC, Michelin America R&D (1,193K)
Moderator: Mark Roberti, Founder and Editor, RFID Journal

4:15 pm
Deployment Strategies: The IT Framework
(374K)
One of the biggest challenges to any technology implementation is pulling together the pieces of the framework. This session will detail RFID solutions framework for the aviation industry and the impact of those frameworks on existing and legacy systems. The goal: to help you develop a deployment strategy.
Speaker: Jinan AbouShakra, President and CEO, CODEplus

4:45 pm
Aviation Issues: RFID FAQs, Roll-Out Plans and Next Steps (115K)
Boeing and Airbus will review the frequently asked questions (FAQ ?s) they have received from their suppliers via previous polling and research. Additionally, Boeing and Airbus will go over the RFID implementation plan and timeline they envision and provide a summary of the anticipated ?next steps ? in order to stay on track with RFID adoption in the commercial aviation.
Speakers: Jens Heitmann, Senior Manager, System/Equipment Standardization Process and Methods, Airbus
Kenneth Porad, Program Manager, Automated Identification Program, Boeing Commercial Airplanes Group
Daryl Remily, Deputy Program Manager, Automated Identification Program, Boeing Commercial Airplanes Group
