Mark Harnitchek

Rear Admiral Mark D. Harnitchek received a Bachelor of Arts degree from The Pennsylvania State University in 1977 and was commissioned an ensign in the Navy through the ROTC Program. He received a master's degree in management from the Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, Calif., in 1987. Rear Adm. Harnitchek most recently served as the Vice Director for Logistics, Joint Staff.

Harnitchek has served in a variety of sea tours, including two submarines, USS Will Rogers (SSBN 659) and USS Buffalo (SSN-715). During these tours, he served as the ship's diving officer and officer of the deck, and won two consecutive Supply Blue "E" Awards for logistics excellence. He then served as the assistant supply officer in the submarine tender USS Holland (AS-32), where the ship won a Supply Blue "E" award and the Edward F. Ney Award for Food Service Excellence.

Rear Adm. Harnitchek later served as supply officer in the submarine tender USS Proteus (AS-19), decommissioning that ship in 1992. His most recent sea tour was aboard the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71). During that tour, the Roosevelt was awarded a fourth Supply Blue "E" award. His shore duty assignments include Commander Submarine Group Seven/Commander Task Force Seven Four, Yokosuka, Japan; Navy Ships Parts Control Center; Chief of Naval Operations Staff; Executive Assistant to the Commander Naval Supply Systems Command; Naval Air Station Oceana; and Director of Aviation Operations at the Naval Inventory Control Point, Philadelphia; Commander, Naval Inventory Control Point, Philadelphia and Mechanicsburg, Pa.

He was selected for the rank of Rear Admiral Upper Half in April 2005. Rear Adm. Harnitchek's awards include the Defense Superior Service Medal, three Legions of Merit, five Meritorious Service Medals, three Navy Commendation Medals, one Navy Achievement Medal and a Fleet Ballistic Missile Patrol Pin (four stars).
