Improving Traceability for Beverage Companies with RFID
Thursday, May 19, 2022: 9:00 AM – 9:40 AM
To keep pace with consumer demand, beverage companies rely on automated, high-speed filling lines that operate in a continuous, non-stop process flow, producing upwards of 2,500 items per minute, per line. The slightest problem on these automated lines has a major operational impact. If a vent tube (a critical filling component) is lost or damaged during the filling process, it becomes a safety and quality issue for the beverage manufacturer and is very costly to locate. Learn how RFID Journal 2021 award finalist Enpro (formerly Dorcia Engineering) is using RFID technology to enable bottlers to reduce downtime and increase safety, as well as improve the reliability of the production process.

Reducing Inventory Time with Drones
Thursday, May 19, 2022: 9:45 AM – 10:25 AM
Dr. Tali Freed, Director of PolyGAIT-RFID Research and Development Center will share the results of recent research projects which found that an RFID-enabled unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), or drone, can read tags attached to static inventory (for example, steel drills or utility pipes) at an accuracy rate of 95 to 100 percent. In addition to effectively managing heavy equipment assets in storage yards or at construction sites, Dr. Freed will also discuss how drones instrumented with UHF RFID, GPS, and cameras can effectively manage cattle.
Speaker: Dr. Tali Freed, Professor, Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering, Cal Poly SLO, Director, PolyGAIT, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo

Wheel of Apps: A Spin Through Some Less Common RFID Solutions
Thursday, May 19, 2022: 10:30 AM – 11:10 AM
A search for RFID projects often results in a few common solution categories. Join us on a review of various solutions you may not have seen. Tracking apparel is well documented. But what about products being placed into steel shipping containers by hand? Or how would you conduct cycle inventories on racks where the path isn’t always clear enough for wheeled robots to navigate? Have you ever tried to determine the expiry information in a -40 degree freezer? Is the shock or moisture experienced in transit too much? We will take a look at some of these challenges and discuss some of the solutions currently available.
Speaker: Kevin Berisso Ph.D., Director, AutoID Lab, University of Memphis
