Can RFID Reduce Out-of-Stocks and Spoilage?
As much as eight percent of the time consumers want to buy a product, the shelves are empty, resulting in a missed opportunity to make a sale. On the other hand, having too many goods in stock increases inventory costs and, with perishable goods, causes losses due to spoilage. RFID advocates say the technology can strike a balance between out-of-stocks and overstocks: keeping sufficient items in stock while simultaneously reducing inventory and spoilage in perishable goods. Can these goals really be achieved? A panel of early retail adopters debates the issue.
Panelists: Dirk Heymann, Auto-ID '.Director Europe, Gillette Group International; Frans-Peter Scheer, Project Manager, Supply Chain Management of Perishables, Agrotechnology & Food Innovations, Wageningen University and Research Centre; Dave West, Operation Manager, Worldwide Fruit

Volkswagen Keeps 10,000 Containers from Going Astray
Volkswagen, one of the largest automobile manufacturers in the world, has been using active RFID for nearly four years in logistics, manufacturing and final preparation of cars for delivery. The company will talk about its successful use of RFID, where it achieved a positive return on investment. VW uses active transponders in three different locations to track more than 10,000 containers. RFID tags on each container enable Volkswagen to optimize the flow of containers and materiel. The company also will talk about its application of active RFID in a truck manufacturing plant in Poznan, Poland.

Active RFID Case Study: pH Europe
Logistics provider ph Europe leases bulk containers that its clients in the pharmaceutical and chemical industries use to transport products, many of which are hazardous and must be kept within limited temperature ranges. To avoid contamination, containers cannot be used for different products, even after cleaning. To track its inventory and make sure containers are used properlyand to let customers know the locations of their goods at all timesph Europe developed a real-time tracking system that combines RFID, GPS and bar code data.

Finding Value in the Supply Chain with RFID
RFID holds the promise of a significantly improved supply chain including such tangible benefits as reduced inventory and out-of-stocks as well as improved service levels. But how do companies get there when they already have a well run supply operation? This session will discuss how supply chain processes must change to take advantage of this technology and will outline the opportunities that exist in even a partially enabled RFID world. Attendees will learn how to find value in RFID beyond compliance and develop a strategy for reducing costs through the implementation of RFID technology.

Cutting Through the Hype: Quantifying the ROI on RFID
Amid all the hype around the recent Wal-Mart and DOD deadlines for RFID compliance, the media is full of stories focused on the promises and pitfalls associated with RFID technologies. In this session, Unisys will separate the myth from reality and explore the bottom line business benefits delivered through successful RFID implementations by exploring what visibility means to the extended supply chain (the benefits of end-to end visibility) and building the business case to quantify the benefits RFID and other emerging technologies.
