Weatherford Enhances Downhole Drilling Operations Via RFID

Oil and gas drilling requires RFID systems that are operable in the harshest environments and can overcome such issues as frequent extreme vibration, high pressure and temperature, harsh downhole fluids, and extended use and run times. Working collaboratively with Marathon Oil and PetroWell, Weatherford developed a drilling reamer that employs RFID technology to enable multiple, on-demand activations or deactivations any time during the drilling or tripping processes. To test activation or deactivation of a drilling reamer, a field trial was conducted on the Casey Edward well, drilled by Marathon Oil in North Dakota. The field trial, including a total of eight successful activations or deactivations, proved the tool operational. Using RFID To Track Hazardous Materials

The U.S. Department of Energy, Argonne National Laboratory and Savannah River National Laboratory have developed several active RFID technologies for nuclear applications by government and civilian industries. ARG-US is licensed for commercial production, and has been deployed at several DOE sites. The software manages dataflow among tags, readers, secured databases and Web servers for nuclear material containers during transportation and storage, including offsite source recovery for global threat reduction. The system is improving safety, security, accountability, worker and public health, and environmental protection during storage, transportation and disposal. Learn about an additional RFID system being developed into a wireless sensor network (WSN) platform for monitoring critical facilities, such as civilian nuclear power plants and spent nuclear fuel storage sites. The Rapid Deployable Global Sensing Hazard Alert System (SAV-EM), developed at Savannah River National Laboratory, uses Iridium satellite communications for tracking, and is credit-card-sized. Find out how SAV-EM can provide worldwide geo-location without GPS, but has a dual GPS-Iridium receiver that automatically switches to GPS when signal strength is sufficient. In addition, an ultra-high-secure 802.11/WiFi connection is used for high-speed short-range link, and can be employed by the oil and gas industry, as well as various federal government organizations.

RFID in Harsh Environments: Improving Safety in the Natural Gas Industry With RFID

Australian Oil Refinery Construction Site Tracks Assets With RFID

A global energy company is testing an RFID system from Australian firm Industrial Automation Group to track the locations of hundreds of thousands of assets at a major construction project in a remote region on the west coast of Australia, north of Karratha. Though actual construction of the refinery is not expected to commence until 2014, the RFID team has begun testing tags and readers. At the site where the new refinery will be erected, tags are already being affixed to some of the hundreds of thousands of tools, materials and components that will be used during construction. RFID Technology for Nuclear Applications

Using RFID to Locate Materials in Rugged Conditions

JV Driver Group, a provider of industrial construction services to the oil and gas, energy, petrochemical, forestry and mining sectors, is employing RFID tracking technology that utilizes rugged active tracking tags, chokepoint readers, vehicle readers and handheld interrogators to automate the receiving and locating of materials anywhere at its large industrial construction projects throughout Canada. In March 2011, the firm undertook a 12-month industrial construction project to construct complex pipe-rack and electrical modules within its 80-acre site in Edmonton, Alberta, that would later be shipped to an oil-sands mining site located in Northern Alberta. Tens of thousands of module components and equipment items of varying sizes arrived at Edmonton from around the world, via ocean shipping containers and heavy haul trucks. With so many components arriving at Edmonton within such a short timeframe, it was critical that the materials-management team be able to account for each piece and easily find every component, out of thousands of similar-looking parts in the warehouse or outdoor laydown yards—and in a timely fashion—without holding up a module's construction. RFID Automates Tool and Equipment Rental Trailers

Speedy Services, a provider of rental tools and equipment to the construction and industrial services industry within the United Kingdom, has created a self-service equipment storage and rental solution. The RFID-enabled onsite mobile equipment pod offers flexible hours to accommodate customers, and enables workers to rent the equipment they need, while unused tools remain in the trailer. Tools leaving or returning to the pod are automatically tracked, and rental fees are assessed by means of embedded RFID tags and a fixed UHF RFID reader integrated into the pod. Learn how the pod's tracking systems automatically update a customer's account on Speedy's My Speedy extranet system, thereby offering the customer full visibility regarding its current usage and incurred charges.

RFID Technology for the Oil and Gas Industry

Offshore Engineering and Construction Company Uses RFID to Improve Productivity and Materials Control

McDermott International, Inc., a leading engineering, procurement, construction and installation company, recently completed a pilot project at one of its key fabrication facilities on Batam Island, Indonesia, utilizing RFID technology to help improve planning, work execution, progress reporting and materials management. The initiative focused on the entire work process for fabricating carbon steel spools from warehouse issue, fabrication, external laydown and final installation. The system enables personnel to generate customized RFID labels in-house that are not only weather-resistant but are also metal-friendly. The tagging process allows labels to be attached to metal, while still maintaining readability. Reducing Diesel Fuel Fraud With RFID

Given the high cost of diesel fuel these days, theft at fuel islands can potentially be a $1.8 billion dollar loss to the trucking industry. QuikQ, a software-development firm specializing in improving the industry's control of diesel fuel, is using Gen 2 RFID technology to combat fraud and decrease the amount of time that a driver waits in a fuel lane. Web-based System for Monitoring the Location, Security and Status of Hazardous Material Movements

Dow Chemical is using a combination of the latest automatic-identification technologies, sensors and Web-based software to monitor the real-time location, security status and environmental conditions of in-transit shipments of highly hazardous materials. The system employs transponders that combine sensors, a two-way satellite communications modem and GPS positioning. Information transmitted by the device is forwarded to the asset-management platform, enabling the firm to receive regular location alerts and notifications in the event that something goes wrong or violates a defined business rule. This approach allows Dow to monitor thousands of shipments on an exception basis, and to share that information with any necessary agencies.

Using RFID to Improve Refinery Maintenance

In November 2010, BP implemented 125,000 high-frequency (HF) RFID tags and mobile readers at its facility in Gelsingkerchin, Germany. The deployment's objective was to increase efficiencies during a turnaround (or TAR—a planned, periodic shutdown of a refinery process unit or plant to perform maintenance, overhaul and repair operations, and to inspect, test and replace process materials and equipment), and to replace the existing manual, paper-based system. Managing Tools With RFID

Grunnarbeid, a Norwegian building, construction and highway contractor, is employing EPC Gen 2 RFID tags and readers, as well as GPS and cellular technology, to track the locations and status of tools on work sites. The company provides large-scale construction and civil-engineering services in central Norway, with multiple projects taking place at any given time, and thus needed a way to use technology to improve asset management on various job sites. The system consists of a customized computer wired to an RFID reader, a GPS unit and a cellular device, installed in containers or vehicles that transport and store equipment. RFID for Construction Load Tracking

The Alaska Department of Transportation (DOT), with assistance from researchers at the University of Alaska, recently completed a pilot that tracked asphalt-filled dump trucks from a weigh station in Anchorage to the Glenn Highway construction site, located about an hour's drive away. This involved utilizing an RFID solution that includes 900 MHz active tags attached to trucks, as well as readers installed at the weigh station and attached to a paver—a vehicle that applies hot-mix asphalt to a new road surface—on the construction site. Asphalt, which costs approximately $115 per ton, must be laid while still warm in order for it to set properly, or else a road could experience cracks or other problems down the line. In this session, hear how the pilot used radio frequency identification to track a total of 50,000 tons of asphalt, laid along a 10-mile-long section of a six-lane roadway under construction. Learn how the project provided accurate and reliable data, including an exact record of when each truck was at a particular location, as well as how long it remained there.

Smart Chips, Smart Solutions

At the prompting of its members, FIATECH investigated commercial-ready and near-ready RFID technologies that can be easily adapted for field construction and operations, as well as maintenance applications. The project, known as Smart Chips, planned, resourced and completed eight in-field pilot tests of commercial-ready technologies in high-interest construction-industry applications, including the use of sensors to accelerate concrete maturity readings, locating and tracking fabricated pipe, tracking materials and assets, site tool management and structural strain monitoring. Last year, FIATECH completed a study on leveraging technology to improve construction productivity. Results and findings from this research will be presented and discussed.

Near-Real-Time Monitoring of Project Components

A field test of materials identification and localization technologies was conducted to measure the impact of such technologies on construction productivity at a standard construction project site. Data collected with RFID tags and a GPS device was combined to track materials in large lay-down yard areas. The field test showed that improvements in materials tracking not only enhanced craft labor productivity and expedited materials retrieval to the staging areas, but also improved the predictability and reliability that materials were available when required.
