Transparent Data Collection and How the A&D Industry Achieved It

The commercial aviation industry watched carefully as the retail sector implemented RFID 15 years ago but decided that wouldn’t work for aviation. Aerospace and defense companies created their own specification that was built on the same EPC standard but utilized features the EPC standard had defined yet other industries had ignored. This session will discuss how aerospace companies write actual, readable ASCII data into RFID tags so they can disconnect from the network, how to use filter bits, how to generate meaningful unique IDs for the tags and how transparent data collection has enabled businesses to take the next step toward a digital transformation. RFID Journal Award Winner Session: Enhancing Safety, Security and Safeguards of Hazardous Materials

In this presentation, the speakers describe the ARG-US remote monitoring systems technology developed by Argonne National Laboratory (Argonne) under the auspices of the U.S. Department of Energy Packaging Certification Program, Office of Packaging and Transportation, Office of Environmental Management. Over the past 12 years, Argonne has developed, demonstrated, and deployed two patented technology systems: the smart drum technology and the remote area modular monitoring (RAMM)/TRAVELER, with the goal of enhancing the safety, security, and safeguards (3S) of nuclear and other radioactive materials, including spent nuclear fuel and high-level waste during storage, transportation and disposal. Highlights are provided for selected use cases of ARG-US remote monitoring systems in critical facilities, tracking and monitoring nuclear cargos during vehicle and rail shipments, hands-on exercises in training courses on transport security, and a brief discussion of future directions.

Delta Uses RFID for Baggage Handling and Tracking
