December 6, 2004—Framingham, Massachusetts, research firm IDC released a report Monday examining efforts by U.S.-based services and consulting firms to get involved in RFID. A very strong 47% growth rate in "the market related to consulting, implementation, and managed services" is expected in 2004; 2008 will see that market grow to be worth $2 billion. While RFID services firms this year and last have focused primarily on helping client companies comply with retailer RFID mandates from the likes of Wal-Mart and Target, the report predicts that in 2005 and after, the RFID service leaders will be those firms that are able to go "beyond the mandates" by offering a broad portfolio of RFID deployment services and expertise. The report goes on to note that RFID has become a legitimate opportunity for even the most prestigious consultancies, which are beefing up their RFID talent to meet projected demand.
